Burdaard is a village with approximately 1150 inhabitants and is situated at the Dokkumer Ee, a canal that is part of the famous Elfstedenroute.
The majestic mill de Zwaluw is seen from afar and that’s no wonder. The mill is the highest mill in Friesland. This wood sawing and corn mill is opened for visitors from May 1st until October 1st.
The Ruurd Wiersmahuis in Burdaard is the former home of naive painter Ruurd Wiersma. In addition to his murals other paintings, painted furniture and belongings of the deceased painter are exhibited in his former home.
Every season 23.000 boats cruise the Ee canal which causes a pleasant liveliness. These boats mainly cruise to Dokkum, the most northern city of the Netherlands. Our B&B, de “Bloemenhoeve“ is situated directly next to the Dokkumer Ee.
Dokkum has a rich history as an Admiralty City. Much of its past can be found in the city center of this beautiful city. But there is more than just history. Dokkum has many special shops, beautifully situated terraces and a wide diversity in restaurants.
Only a 15 minute drive away from Dokkum you will find National Park Lauwersoog. There is plenty to see and to do here. There’s a harbour with a fish auction and associated seafood restaurants. The ferry to the isle of Schiermonnikoog departs here. Lauwersoog provides ideal places for a nice walk through the forest, walking along child friendly lakes or sitting on a terrace enjoying the surroundings.
Leeuwarden is the capital of the Friesland province. Leeuwarden has a rich history which is visibile by its canals with beautiful buildings. Several museums and shopping streets, make Leeuwarden a city to wander around.
The Burdaard region provides many possibilites for people who wish to explore the area by bike. There are many marked cycling routes and the route from Dokkum to Leeuwarden passes our Bed & Breakfast. This route along the Ee passes Bartlehiem with its famous bridge.
Only 10km away from Burdaard you’ll find the watery animal world of Aqua Zoo Friesland; What an adventure! Meet seals, penguins, wallabies, flamingos, dwarf otters, ocelots, beavers and pelicans or visit the lemurs on lemur island.
A daytrip to the islands of Ameland or the previously mentioned island of Schiermonnikoog is definitely recommended.
